Our Mentoring Programs

DAYBL Mission

DAYBL is committed to its overall mission of helping young law students and lawyers to advance their education and value in industry. It has been a primary objective of the organization to provide mentoring opportunities for all members, and through the years these efforts have grown in number and scope. Below is a list of our current mentoring programs.

This program was developed by the Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar of Texas and educates high school students about financial responsibility, credit card management, savings, fraud and similar issues. Members of our mentoring committee volunteer their time and travel to local high schools to educate students on these important issues. The response to these presentations has been very positive. DAYBL is working this year to develop relationships with more local high schools in order to share this program with more students in the Dallas Fort Worth area. The Moneywise presentation can be found at www.savewisely.com.

Bankruptcy Trial Skills CLE Course

Every two years, DAYBL presents a Bankruptcy Trial Skills CLE Course in conjunction with The John C. Ford American Inn of Court. The course is designed to teach young practitioners how to improve their trial skills. The program features federal district judges, prominent members of the non-bankruptcy bar and bankruptcy bar alike and culminates in a mock trial written by one of the bankruptcy judges. The response to the CLE has been overwhelming and generally results waiting lists. The next course will be offered in 2018.

Duberstein Moot Court

DAYBL also supports SMU Law School’s participation in the Duberstein National Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition. We provide financial and moral support to the two teams competing in the competition from SMU. Notably, DAYBL members act as judges during practice rounds, assist in the coaching the teams and, in conjunction with SMU, financially supports the teams’ travel to New York City for the competition.

Law School Panel Presentation

DAYBL hosts an annual panel discussion at SMU Law School and at Texas A&M University School of Law and at The University of North Texas at Dallas School of Law to provide law students with an overview of bankruptcy practice. Past panelists have included Northern District Bankruptcy Court Judges, restructuring professionals, creditor’s attorneys, debtor’s attorneys and trustees. Each panelist discusses his or her role in the bankruptcy system and shares his or her unique perspective on bankruptcy with the students. The panels also focus on how to get a job as a bankruptcy attorney.

Community Charity and Pro-Bono Work

DAYBL is devoted to doing charitable and pro-bono work in the community as well. For 2016, DAYBL has pledged to support the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program through proceeds raised at the annual Casino Night event.

Individual Mentoring

As part of its continued efforts to reach out to students interested in bankruptcy, DAYBL has created an informal program to pair law students with practicing bankruptcy attorneys. Interested students are encouraged to email Michael at michaelp@goldenchick.com, where they will be paired with an attorney mentor, who will be available to meet and discuss any questions they may have about bankruptcy in an informal setting.

DAYBL thanks all of its Sponsors and Members for their continued support and participation.
